Hydrogen-peroxide treatment is a common disinfection method within both the food and drug industry. In food packaging it is used to kill off bacteria before the food stuff is filled into the container, to increase the shelf life of the product. Tetra Pak uses hydrogen-peroxide in several of their filling machines. The process starts with introducing a hydrogen-peroxide and water solution in vapor form into the package. The vapor is allowed to condense on the cold package walls. It is important that the liquid film covers the entire vessel to get a uniform treatment. After some seconds the bottle is heated and vented with air in order to evaporate and remove the liquid-film. Water has a lower boiling point than hydrogen-peroxide and leaves the film first why a high hydrogen-peroxide concentration film is obtained achieving the desired killing. This project aims to increase the understanding of the disinfection process in small gaps in order to optimize the process and possibly shorten the disinfection time. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) will be used as a tool to study the process. A model needs to be developed for the condensation and evaporation including surface force effects relevant on the µm scale. The work will include a literature study on modeling capillary condensation and adsorption, combined with a search on previous CFD works within this field. As a proposal, the CFD models to be used will be a VOF or “Fluid film” approach to treat the liquid film and a RANS approach to treat the turbulence. The software used will be Star CCM.
Who are you?
Preferably one MSc-student with specialization in Fluid Mechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics and multiphase flows. A background in chemical engineering or chemical engineering with physics is advantageous but not mandatory.
The Master thesis work is carried at ÅF in Göteborg in collaboration with one of our clients in the food packaging industry. You will be stationed at the ÅF office at Grafiska Vägen in Göteborg, but there will be several trips to Lund to meet their CFD group. The work is intended to start in January 2019 and finish after 20 weeks of full time work (before the summer).
